Legitimize Your Job Search
July 15, 2009 by Brenna
If it is too good to be true, run the opposite way. More and more online job opportunities are popping up every day. Make sure the job you are applying for is real before you fall for the scam.
Don’t always believe what you see in E-mails. There are many scams sent straight from a fake E-mail to your Inbox waiting for you to fall for the bait.
What to look for:
1. Give your Social Security Number (This information should NEVER be given online)
2. Never give personal banking records. A legitimate company will not set up direct deposit through the Internet.
3. Working from home—It is almost always a scam to make you feel comfortable working for them.
4. Foreign Countries
a. If a company says it is in a foreign country but will allow you to “work from home” it is most likely a scam.
Don’t always assume the worst. Learn to check before you completely write a business off. An easy way is to look at their website for contact information. Call the business and let them know that you received an email and ask a few questions. If you can’t easily receive information, there may be a problem. Another way to see if it is a real business or not, try the “Google” approach. Go online and search for the business. If it is a scam, someone will have posted it online. You should also be able to find more information as to what the business does, who they work for, etc.
